Jonas Kaltenbach
Jonas Kaltenbach was born in 1994 and grew up with three brothers in the southwester-
part of Germany, close to France. In his childhood he liked to dance to music from the 60’s-80’s on parties of his parents. Then he startet playing piano, later discovered his fascination for percussion instruments
and the drumset. His musical encounter with others startet by playing in high school
pop/rock-groups and big bands. Following the opportunities that seemed to be given to
make music, he studied Jazz/Pop-Drums in Mannheim and Cologne for seven years,
finishing his master in 2022. Currently, Jonas is mostly listening to (Afro-)Brazilian music, learning more about traditional African music styles, playing freely improvised concerts and trying to understand
his responsibilities and opportunities as a white man from western Europe being able to
choose freely, what to do and where to go. How to include his musical work and talent into
building communities and supporting political and social change is his biggest challenge
and motivation at the moment. Still touring around and playing concerts in different parts of Europe, he likes to question the sometimes non-reflected acceptance of the existing structures and patterns of behaviour in the scenes of art, culture and music as he got to know them so far. He enjoys being a live musician in the process of freeing himself from the rules he learned in schools and being searching for a more wide range of contexts for sharing his love for music.
